Deacon Sherman travels around the region and beyond to teach courses, speak in faith formation events, and to facilitate retreats. Because his itinerary each year is very full, requests for him to speak should  be made at least ONE YEAR before the intended date of the event to make it possible for him to meet your requests. Requests may be sent directly through e-mail to Deacon Sherman by navigating to the CONTACT PAGE.

COURSES

Deacon Sherman teaches faith formation courses that are slightly longer in length/duration and more comprehensive in content besides the shorter talks that he often also delivers. Some of them are as follows:

DIALOGUE OF SALVATION: CATHOLICS CALLED TO EVANGELISE (6 SESSIONS)

Picture
The mandate of the Holy Catholic Church is clear, that every Christian, by virtue of his baptismal promise, has an obligation to share his faith with the rest of the world through dialogue and proclamation. The Gospel is Good News that must be transmitted in its entirety and in all clarity.

But do we understand the people that we need to evangelise? And how should we share our faith with them in a way that respects their dignity and conscience? How should we share our faith with people in a personal way? Also, how can evangelisation take place through our families?

In this six-session course, Deacon Sherman Kuek explains some of these foundational matters that pertain to the Christian obligation to live our lives as a dialogue of salvation.

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE? CATHOLICS, ORTHODOX AND PROTESTANTS (8 SESSIONS)

Picture
People are generally curious about the differences in the practices and beliefs of the Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Christians. For those of us who are a part of the Catholic Church, what does it mean that we are Catholic? What is the nature of our relationship with Christians who are outside of the Catholic Church? How are the various streams of Christianity similar and/or different in their way of worship, their governance and in their teachings in faith and morals?

In a Christian world that is sadly divided, it is important that we once again begin to attempt to understand the differences among the various expressions of Christianity, which then forms the basis for honest dialogue and a mutual search for truth. This eight-session course aims to help its participants better understand the beliefs of people coming from various Christian traditions. It may be of interest to both Christians and people from other religious traditions.

THE SPLENDOUR OF TRUTH: DIFFICULT QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH (8 SESSIONS)

Picture
There are many myths surrounding the ancient Catholic faith and its beliefs. People have various questions, even suspicions, about the Catholic Church's historical past, its handling of Scripture, its beliefs about Mary, the priesthood, the papacy and the Sacraments, among others.

This eight-session course aims to help Catholics to better understand their history, as well as the Scriptural and theological bases for their Catholic beliefs which are usually difficult to explain.

KEEPING THE FAITH: WHAT ST PAUL TAUGHT THE EARLY CHRISTIANS (6 SESSIONS)

Picture
The recent popes have been calling for a heightened sense of responsibility among the faithful for a "New Evangelisation" of the world. In order for this to happen, all Catholics are once again challenged to return to the heart of the Gospel message. With this, we call to mind the apostolic ministry of one of the greatest evangelists of all time, St Paul, who revolutionised the ancient world through his evangelisation activity and teaching of the Word of God.

Who was St Paul, really?  How much has he impacted Christianity as we know it today?  And what did he really teach in his multiple volumes of letters written to the Christians in various parts of the world?  And most importantly, what do his teachings mean for us? This six-session series of talks journeys with its audience through an intriguing study to discover who the Apostle Paul was and what his life project was about, in order that we too may be bearers of this very Gospel taught by our Fathers.

THE HOUR OF THE LAITY: UNDERSTANDING THE VOCATION OF THE LAITY IN THE CHURCH (6 SESSIONS)

Picture
After the Second Vatican Council, there often seems to have been confusion among clergy, religious and laity in the Church on what the differences are in their vocations.  As a result, we witness today unprecedented movements in the Church towards the gradual laicisation of the clergy and the clericalisation of the laity.  A proper understanding of the roles of clergy, religious and laity needs to be restored.

This need has become particularly pronounced among the laity as the lay faithful have been given more prominent emphasis in the Church since Vatican II.  The Church continues to call for the formation of all the lay faithful who share in the priestly, prophetic and kingly mission of Christ in the world.

This six-session course aims to help the lay faithful of the Church - families, married couples, parents, single people, young people, lay leaders - to understand the characteristics of their lay vocation and the roles and responsibilities proper to their vocation.  It helps its participants to understand what this all means for their daily lives as the lay faithful of the Church.

LITURGY OF LIFE: THINGS YOU NEVER KNEW ABOUT THE MASS (16 SESSIONS)

Picture
Many churchgoing Catholics are so familiar with the Mass, they often take it for granted that they already know everything there is to know about it. Think you know the Mass?  Get ready to be surprised about how much more there is to know and learn! This course takes its participants through every part of the Mass and helps them to have an increasingly deeper understanding of even the seemingly insignificant parts of the Liturgy that we celebrate. It provokes much reflection and desire to be immersed in the liturgical life of the Church in a more profound way.

In this sixteen-session course, be prepared to discover facts about the Mass that you might never have heard of before. Covering aspects of historical development, theological meaning and liturgical rubrics, come and be amazed once more at what God does for you in the Liturgy of His Church.

The christian truth: why we believe in the son of god

Picture
This series of talks aims to provide logical and evidential explanations to the most fundamental beliefs of the Christian faith. The explanations provided seek to answer the following concerns:

1. Introduction - What is apologetics?
2. Has the Christian Bible been corrupted?
3. Do Christians worship three gods?
4. Is Jesus really divine?
5. Was Jesus really crucified?

RETREATS

DISCIPLES TOGETHER: RENEWING OUR OUR COMMITMENT TO FOLLOW CHRIST

Picture
Many of us are deeply aware that we are called to be Disciples of Christ, Followers of the Way. But what truly does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus? What does Christ truly require of each person who claims to follow Him? Are you seeking to deepen your understanding of your journey with God? Do you want to gain a deeper sense of where are you now in your life as a disciple?

This three-day retreat invites you to embark on a journey towards a much deeper understanding what Christ truly meant when He told His early Apostles, “Come, follow me...” or “Come and see...” You will discover what discipleship requires of you, and what you need to get in place in your life, so that you can truly deepen your relationship with Christ and His Church beyond where you are now.

LORD, TEACH US TO PRAY: A RETREAT ON THE LORD's PRAYER

Picture
The Lord’s Prayer is perhaps the one prayer prayed most often by Catholics, and yet, perhaps also the prayer most often taken for granted. This may be because it is prayed so often as part of our daily spiritual practice as well as our liturgical life together as the worshipping community.

In this three-day retreat, you are invited to draw yourself deeper into the heart of this prayer. The retreat will help retreatants to understand why it is the best prayer that a discipleship of Jesus Christ can ever say. It will also bring to light deeper paradoxes from the statements of this prayer that are often missed by those who pray it.

PRAYING WITH COLOURS: JOURNEYING THROUGH THE PASCHAL MYSTERY WITH ICONS

Picture
Over the centuries, religious artists have transformed Scripture into images through their sacred paintings. These paintings are called “icons”. The word “icon” means “image”, and the story of icons in the Christian Church is a story of learning to gaze into the mystery of God. The realities portrayed by words in Scripture, icons portray through colours. The icon is the occasion of a sort of revelation - in line and colour - of the kingdom of God.  Hence the very icon itself is a sacred reality.

In this prayer retreat, Deacon Sherman Kuek journeys with you through some very sacred events of Scripture and guides you on how to pray with these biblical events which are portrayed in colour.

LEADERSHIP RETREAT

Picture
The call to leadership in the Christian context is radically different from the kind of leadership embraced by the world. Christian leadership is a call to discipleship, brokenness, purpose, servanthood and courage.

In this retreat for leaders, Deacon Sherman Kuek helps the retreatants to understand how the call to Christian leadership requires a change of paradigm in the way we usually understand and take our roles as leaders among the People of God.
